Heads slumped low and a glazed over look was a common sight and all this was silhouetted against some white-out conditions. It was a beautiful scene of recreational suffering. If only every WRCS could be this arduous. Maybe it should?

It looks as though the two who showed up for social points had the right idea.

Jeff, your kit had a real Belgian super-fan feel to it. A fitting way to celebrate the Belgium bashing they dealt out at the Cyclocross World Championships today.

You see, unbeknownst to Norb there was a surprise birthday party awaiting him this evening and he was duped into a shindig instead of a lycra-fest.

Its a rarity, but it seems fitting to still award some points to a rider who very well intended to ride, but was rather hijacked for hopefully an evening of celebratory half-century debauchery.

It is with great privilege that every year, early into the season, an announcement can be made on behalf of THREE SIXTY promotions.

And this season is no different. The crew from THREE SIXTY, with the support of the Ciociaro Cycling Club, are at it again. Building upon the successes of last years several Ontario Cups, and specifically the O-Cup hosted at the Ciociaro track facility, they have secured the 2012 Provincial Criterium Championships for the labour day weekend.

THREE SIXTY organizer Dylan is always quick with a smile, even while winter riding.

On September 1st the incredibly unique cycling track at the Ciociaro Club will again play host to the regions fastest cyclists. The event, along with being the Provincial Championships, has also been designated as a Youth Cup event as well, making for a full day of racing for all ages.

Provided that the historic Tour di Via Italia can regain any momentum lost during its one year hiatus, then this area will become a must-destination for a weekend of great racing.

The podium for the overall title seems firmly in the hands of the single-speeders, but maybe this is the year The Butcher cracks and relinquishes his strangle hold of the WRCS.

The Winter Ride Challenge Series always sets the tone for the upcoming year of riding. This pic pretty much sums up the series. Less then ideal road conditions being tackled by cyclists of all sorts; roadies on skinny tires to riders pushing heavy-knobbed singe-speeds.

Racing. One of my favourite reasons to ride, and sometimes its more about the traveling then the actual competition. This pic brings up great memories of staying in a lakeside cottage with a group of friends ready to tackle an Ontario Cup.

Just riding. This picture reminds me of all the endless kilometers spent riding and training during early morning group rides or late evening excursions with fantastic riding partners.

2012 Winter Ride Challenge Series

The 4th edition of the W.R.C.S. is almost a month away. This years series will closely resemble the previous edition and cyclists will have 18 stages to stake their claim to the overall title.

This years edition will feature the toughest opening stage to date - a New Years Day prologue.

Recommended Bike: Mountain or cyclo-cross to combat poor road conditions.
Ride Length: 2-3 hours weather pending. Ride will be attempted regardless.
Ride Time: 11:00 am departure on Sundays. 6:00 pm departure on Fridays.
Ride Dates:
January 1st, 8th, 13th, 15th, 22nd, 27th, 29th.
February 5th, 10th, 12th, 19th, 24th, 26th.
March 4th, 9th, 11th, 18th, 23rd.

Points System: Riders earn points based on each rides temperature (colder = more points).

The points formula is 25 minus the lowest posted wind chill temp at weather.com for the ride area for that ride period.
15 bonus points are awarded to Friday night rides.
10 bonus points are awarded to single-speeders.
One ride worth double points to be appointed.

Ride Style: Overall these will be easy paced rides used to build base fitness mileage and be somewhat social in nature.

In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes. The story would later be recounted in the movie Alive. The film seems fitting for last evenings Bash.

Not everyone made it out. The fortunate helped the less fortunate. Pretty sure some were cannibalized and like the original, of the 45 people who embarked on the trip, only 16 survived.

Until next year? Probably not.

The first race in the books. The mud and dirt is still in my teeth.

The sun was out and the top soil was peanut butter, a perfect way to race cyclocross. Thanks to all who raced, spectated, or helped out.

This is the third year for the Country Cross Series, and it is the only course (race No.1) that has featured in all three editions. It has become a favourite venue for its tight singletrack sections contrasted by the wide open doubletrack areas - well that, and the relentless have fun atmosphere.

The weekend consisted of the annual pilgrimage to the Bike The Bruce race.

Saturday we arrived in cottage country, and spent the day lakeside watching the rain fall and the wind gust as any motivation to do a pre-ride of the course was washed away in the deluge of precipiation.

Sunday we awoke to cool temps, strong winds, but welcomed sunshine. The only thing left to do was find some motivation.

Six team-mates made the trip, for some it was the return to an event they have done every year since its inception, and for one it would mark there first attempt at a true road race format.

The course itself is unique in the region and offers participants the chance to test themselves over undulating terrain and along a lengthy scenic course.

As for the racing, it went well, and how could it have not? A great event, stunning accommodations, and tolerable travelling companions - perfect.

Passion

It's a sport, hobby, or a reason to wear a costume for most cyclists.

But regardless of your motivation, it requires a lot of enthusiasm to train, compete or just simply ride. Emotions are easily evoked when the intensity of the efforts are demanding on the body.

Everyone who puts out the efforts wants nothing more then a little respect in return and it can be easy to forget to pay forward the same courtesy when its all on the line.

Cycling is a dramatic endeavour, with highs and lows and powerful story lines that play out over some of the simplest and most awe-inspiring playing fields in sport. Embrace it and respect that it still is a sport, one that requires a lot of passion.

After weeks of unfriendly weather, a group was finally able to assemble and partake in the age old ritual of 'being-jerks-to-each-other-in-a-sporting-manner'.

There was even a Klobber sighting. He's kind of like the Sasquatch (only in mythical lore and elusiveness, not appearance).

Ride Of Silence

The crew at Bike Friendly Windsor request your participation for a worthwhile event.

Bike Friendly Windsor (BFW), a local cycling advocacy group, is hosting the city's first 'Ride of Silence', a memorial ride dedicated to those who have been injured or killed while riding their bikes. BFW is teaming up with the Windsor Downtown Mission for this event, which will take place on May 18th, beginning at the Mission (664 Victoria Avenue). Registration for the event is at 6pm, and the ride will commence at 7pm sharp.

Cyclists will take to the roads in a slow, silent procession to honour cyclists who have been hurt or have died due to an accident while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. This event aims to raise motorists' awareness, demonstrating that cyclists have a legal right to the use of public roadways without fear.

Riders are invited to wear black arm bands in order to show support for friends and family who have suffered, and a red arm band if they themselves have been in an accident while riding. Helmets are required for this event and bright clothing is highly recommended for the ride home after. Bike lights are a mandatory safety feature for the ride home, as well.

A funeral hearse, donated by the Anderson and Walter D. Kelly Funeral Homes, will provide safe escort for the participants and underscore the dire implications of not heeding the intended message of the event. A police escort will also be present during the entire ride around the downtown core.

There is no cost to participants and no pledges to be collected, but donations will be welcomed. Proceeds will go towards furthering BFW's goals of making Windsor a bike-friendly city, as well as helping the Downtown Mission continue their necessary service to Windsorites.

About the Ride of Silence (www.rideofsilence.org):

Chris Phelan first got the idea for a memorial ride in Dallas of 2003 after his friend, endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz, was killed by a passing bus mirror on an empty road. Within weeks, the first Ride of Silence was organized and over 1000 riders participated in the emotional event. Since then, Ride of Silence rallies have taken place worldwide, and thousands of people have supported the movement by riding slowly and silently, en masse, on the third Wednesday of May.

Thursday had a rare ball of fire illuminating the sky - great conditions for the first mountain bike race of the season.

The next day the typical gray-washed skies appeared for the annual Good Friday Road Ride. Cold rain, hail, and wind made for a miserable excursion (sorry, but it was).

Up next, more road racing and mountain bike racing. Getting the chance to race every week and never have to leave the area has been the one positive despite the stubborn weather patterns.

Two day bender

Its tough to comedown after a solid few days of all things local cycling.

First up was the season start-up of the Ciciaro Race Series. Another well run event that saw a solid turn-out of racers and supporters.

Turning lap, after lap, after lap, all in the name of sport and competition was a great way to let the body know that the season of suffering had begun.

The next night was the Athletica Fashionista, an evening of mingling, dining, cat-walking, and celebrating many (but not all) bike related things in the area.

One real highlight of the night was the unveiling of the ROUNDTAIL bike. This innovative beauty has been receiving national press, and its roots are based locally.

Local vendors representing cyclists, runners, triathletes, and health-conscious individuals all showed their support and displayed numerous products and services available to consumers.

Next up is some recovery, then some biking, then some racing, and then the repeat.

2011 WRCS No.19 - The Finale

This ride had a lot of dynamics going on. There was an element of danger and adventure around every corner.

The mayhem broke down like this:

1. An early morning pancake/bacon/sausage breakfast - all on the bike.
2. A podium hopeful called the cops on the top three.
3. A feats of strength competition to determine the outright WRCS winner.
4. A trail/bike/pedestrian collision.
5. The return home, surprisingly in one piece.

Once again, a sincere thanks to all those who participated in the Winter Ride Challenge Series. Showing up to ride on cold Sunday mornings and Friday nights would not have been possible without an enthusiastic and adventurous group of cyclists to share it with. Best of luck to everyone in the upcoming cycling season.

Here are just a few things that are going on locally between now and then.

Get your runway on.

Ciociaro Thursday Road Series will be commencing April 14th and running till August 18th. Get your lactic-laden endorphins running.

WRCS No.18 Info: The last Friday night ride will take the roads to Harrow, and the Greenway back home.

WRCS No.19 Info: The finale will leave Taloola at 11:00am, but a tie-breaker will be held at 10:30am for those interested in viewing the spectacle. Be prepared to get muddy as the route will incoroporate some trail sections.

One weekend and two rides are all that remain.

Just think how liberating it will be in one weeks time to forego the limited gearing and big, grime eating knobbies, all in favour of that sleek road machine being ignored in the corner. Bliss.

This has become one of the traditional rides to signify the season of skinny tires.

Tumultuous weather was generally present for the previous rides. Not this day though, as overcast skies gave way to sun and the ever present wind.

Regardless of a winter spent pushing the treaded tires through the snow, the ride on the road bike set-up still hurts the same at the end. Probably the same hurt one would experience walking 18 holes of golf.

The lesson of the ride - never leave your bike unattended.

Next weeks ride will end with a quick celebratory gathering at an undisclosed location. Well, it was disclosed if you were at the ride today, otherwise, just follow the masses till you find the destination.

Also, the group looked exceptionally strong today. This would not bode well for anyone who opted to vacation in sunny climes sans bike. Lazy days of golf and lady booze will mean that someone (JLo) is going to get quickly dispensed out the back of his first group ride upon return. Enjoy the mojito's.

By all accounts of the morning winter blast, the evening ride was looking to be a real struggle. But even the weather will conform to the WRCS' will.

Pleasant-ish temps and calm winds rolled in just in time for a fantastic ride. The only thing that slowed the group down was a broken chain and luckily one person out of nineteen was prepared for just such an incident.

There are talks of bribes afoot. Is it possible that the overall winner will be decided by such bribes? The magic 8-ball says 'most definitely'.

The group dodged another winter storm and enjoyed the clear roads for the few remaining hours.

Tagging along for the ride was Dino. He rides constantly, whether it be in training rides or the local race series and they don't come much tougher than him. This was the brief exchange on the ride.

Dino: "Are you ready for this? I'm 69."
bikeSABBATH: "Absolutely incredible."
Dino: "Hey, don't tell anybody or I will beat the shit out of you."
[PAUSE]
Dino: "And don't tell my wife."

The best part of any ride no matter how fast or how long it is, you can drift to the back of the pack and be quickly told by Dino "Hey, you don't belong back here." Nothing like being shamed into riding more on the front.

In the words of a fallen contender, "and then there were three".

High winds and frigid temps did nothing to dampen the spirits of 17 riders. Even when the roads were drifted over and visibility was scarce, the group managed to grind out a slow tempo into a bloc headwind, followed by a quick tailwind return.

As with last year it was very close to the Chilean's birthday. Unfortunately for us, the group was not again entertained by his celebratory antics. Fortunately for him, he can wake up the next day without his eyeballs bleeding. In the meantime, please review his party prowess from last season.

It should be noted that Garneau Bob earned social points on this evening after graciously purchasing libations. Let that be a lesson to all - the dealer of points is not above bribes.

This fridays night ride looks to be forecasting some substantial point potential. The big chill is coming, meaning big points are on tap.

There is also a chance to show up to a ride, do the usual amount of work, but be rewarded with double the points. Well, the Winter Ride Challenge Series DOUBLE POINTS ride has been set for No.14 on March 6th.

So go get yourself a bike, and hit at least a couple of the rides that are going to offer up a chance to get on the scoreboard in a big way.

And then there were four.

Barring any mishaps, this year's winner will emerge from the current top four leaders. In the event it is needed, what should the tie-breaker be? Perhaps a cook-off? Maybe a wrench-off? Or a massage-off? What about a science tutorial-off? We shall see.

As for the ride itself, overall it was really entertaining and eventful. Such as:

1. Wet roads.
2. A stranded pick-up freed by superheroes in tights.
3. Some impromptu back wheel wrenching at the side of the road.
4. More wet roads.

There was even a little motorpacing at the end. How fast do three guys all on single-speeds get going behind the draft of a vehicle? Well, not very fast, but still impressive after a 100+km of riding.

The legs got softened up with some trail riding around a conservation area, then it was on to the county ramble.

Wind-swept sunny roads, both gravel and paved, compromised the next several hours. Each turn required a reformation of echelons to buffer the cross and head winds. In the end you knew you rode as the legs spun in a depleted state.

The use of a light road machine in the coming months will be a welcome feeling.
